Video Relay Service

Can I use an ethernet to wifi adapter instead of all this ethernet cable?

I got 150 feet of cat 5 from the router to my vrs (video relay service) phone for the deaf and hard of hearing. I have ran over it twice and chewed it up with a vacum and have triped over it 5 times. Its very dangerous having all this cable laying on the floor. My wifi is G. Will I need open wifi, which is less secure, or can I get an adapter that does wap and wep? Will the wifi slow down the video on my vrs phone or will I be fine?

  1. You should be able to take a pair of Network routers, one at the MPOE (Main point of Entry or where your DSL modem connects) and then create a bridged network to the location of your VRS, You will still need a couple of cables to attach these items up to that router but they only have to be long enough to reach from the router to the equipment. You can (and should) run a secure network, video takes roughly 20 mbps for high quality and Wireless 802.11g is 54 mpbs so you should not have many problems there either. Currently, I have 2 wireless Access Points in a bridged network, the only thing that is allowed to talk on this network are the two AP's them selves. One of the AP's is in my work shop, the other is in my house, the one in the shed is attached to a small 4 port switch where my other PC's are attached, the one in the house is attached to my Linksys router. I think one of the easiest AP/Routers to setup the way you want to do it is the Belkin (mine are Nortel and not generally available)
  2. You should be able to get a wireless adapter that will do what you need. Most of the adapters allow for WPA encyption Check out the DWL-G820 at D-Link.com
